چکیده
the sulphated form of ascorbic acid may play a role in the maintenance of connective tissue, suggested that although 35S-labelled glycosaminoglycans are formed in the presence of ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulphate, they are not formed by direct transfer of the sulphate moiety from ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulphate but by a decomposition product of the ester (Shapiro & Poon, 1975). The role of ascorbic acid 2-sulphate in the sulphation of cholesterol is also unclear (Verlangieri & Mumma, 1973). Other investigations on the anti-scorbutic properties of the sulphate ester of ascorbic acid have yielded conflictingresults(Mummaetal., 1972; Campeauetal., 1973). Althoughitis notclaimedthat the work reported here clarifies the role of ascorbic acid sulphate, it may well explain some of the anomalous results obtained by other workers using the 35S-labelled ester. In particular, the work of Hornig (1974) on the metabolic fate of the 35S-labelled ester sulphate in rats and guinea pigs, showing the variations in the extents of secretion and recovery of radioactivity could be rationalized if the 35S-labelled preparation could not be identified with pure L-ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulphate. It is not suggested that the enterogastric circulation exists for the circulation of the ascorbic acid 2-[3sS]sulphate derivative, but that this compound is utilizing a conservation route normally travelled by naturally occurring compounds. I t seems likely that this circulatory route may be a n important mechanism of conservation for certain biochemicals and might be exploited for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

Xanthium strumarium L. antimicrobial activity and carboxyatractyloside analysis through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry
The aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Xanthium strumarium L. leaf extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Clostridium perfringens, as well as to investigate the presence of the toxic compound carboxyatractyloside in different plant parts. S. aureus and C. perfringens were more sensitive to non-pola...
متن کاملWhole Plant and Leaf Steady State Gas Exchange during Ethylene Exposure in Xanthium strumarium L.
The effects of ethylene evolved from ethephon on leaf and whole plant photosynthesis in Xanthium strumarium L. were examined. Ethylene-induced epinasty reduced light interception by the leaves of ethephon treated plants by up to 60%. Gas exchange values of individual, attached leaves under identical assay conditions were not inhibited even after 36 hours of ethylene exposure, although treated l...
متن کاملEffects of extraction methods of phenolic compounds from Xanthium strumarium L. and their antioxidant activity
Efeito de métodos de extração de compostos fenólicos de Xanthium strumarium L. e suas atividades antioxidantes. The effect of extraction methods and solvents on overall yield, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and the composition of the phenolic compounds in Xanthium strumarium extracts were studied. The antioxidant activity was determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radi...
متن کاملComparisons of Photosynthetic Responses of Xanthium strumarium and Helianthus annuus to Chronic and Acute Water Stress in Sun and Shade.
We have examined the effects of mild, chronic water stress and acute water stress on two water stress sensitive plants, Xanthium strumarium and Helianthus annuus. Using a combination of the leaf disc O(2) electrode to measure the light responses of photosynthesis and 77 K fluorescence to monitor damage to the primary photochemistry, we have found the following: (a) The CO(2) saturated rate of p...
متن کاملDynamics of stomatal patches for a single surface of Xanthium strumarium L. leaves observed with fluorescence and thermal images
Fluorescence and thermal imaging were used to examine the dynamics of stomatal patches for a single surface of Xanthium strumarium L. leaves following a decrease in ambient humidity. Patches were not observed in all experiments, and in many experiments the patches were shortlived. In some experiments, however, patches persisted for many hours and showed complex temporal and spatial patterns. Ra...
